Proposed Logging Project South of Bozeman

The Montana Land Board will meet next week to decide on the DNRC proposed Limestone West Timber Sale.  The area affected starts by the popular Triple Tree hiking trail south of Bozeman and goes east towards Mt Ellis covering 443 acres of land.  Approximately the first mile of forest is state school trust land and they have an obligation to raise the most funds possible for schools.  The proposed timber sale could bring in $376,000.  It would largely harvest dead or dying trees from bark beetle and improve the forest health according to DNRC.  Another option that opponents to the timber sale are considering is a Conservation License with DNRC in lieu of logging.  Essentially opponents to the logging project could outbid the timber companies.  Opponents claim there in not enough consideration given for wildlife habitat and the disruption that new roads and logging activity would cause.
